A couple of months after installation it is no longer necessary to worry about sod care. At this point, it will have rooted and become a fully-established lawn. Numerous tools help to maintain this precious investment properly. Here is what everyone should own in order to care for their lush new lawn.
Cut the Grass
A lawnmower is a necessity, but anyone that wants a perfectly manicured lawn should also invest in edging shears and a string trimmer too. It is possible that either tool could do both edging and trimming, but use both for the best result.

Edging shears are clippers with extended handles, so there is no need to bend or stoop. Very large lawns may require the use of a gas powered version. Edgers neaten the borders of the lawn to keep sidewalks and driveways clear and avoid a scraggly appearance.

Overgrown edges against a wall or other solid border require a string trimmer. Use trimmers when the grass is by a garden fence, the foundation of a home or around decorative features. It does not damage the solid material, but it could leave marks on painted surfaces.

Keep it Hydrated
A garden hose is useful for small watering tasks and works best for larger areas when you pair it with a sprinkler. Portable sprinklers attach to hoses, and fully automated systems are installed into the landscape. Determining what method is best will depend on the time available for watering and the lawn size.

The manual option of a pulsing or rotary sprinkler requires the user to turn it on and move it around the yard in order for everything to receive the correct level of water. It is useful for people that want to cut the amount of time they work on their lawn, but want to oversee the process.

A built-in system is timed to add water to different zones according to the needs of each area. Install this type of system before you put the sod in place. Anyone that is away from home often or that lacks the physical ability to do the work on their own benefits from automated sprinklers.

Rake it Up
Leaf and thatch rakes help to keep the grass free of lawn debris that could reduce its exposure to sun and water. A thatch rake breaks up matted, dead grass near the soil and pulls the thatch up and away from the growing grass. The tines also are helpful for aerating the soil before adding fertilizer or seed.

A leaf rake makes it easy to gather the thatch after it is raked up from the soil. In the spring it pulls out any dead grass and lifts the fresh shoots that have been flattened by winter storms. During the summer a leaf rake is an invaluable tool that cleans up whatever the mower or timmers leave behind.

Tend the Sod
No matter how perfect sod is when you install it, there is still the potential for occasional problems. Remove any sod damaged by extreme weather, lawn pests or other issues. A sod saw and sod plugger make this a much easier task.

Sod saws are small serrated blades that cut through the grass and roots and enable pieces to be lifted and removed. Once the brown patch is out of the way, it is possible to treat the soil and place another piece of sod into the bare spot for a flawless lawn.

Sod pluggers add small plugs of grass in thin areas. The plugger removes small areas of damaged grass or lifts a portion of the soil from the ground to create a hole for the fresh plug to be put in place. Unlike grass seed, it is instant and prevents bare spots during the growing season.
