Having a beautiful lawn means having beautiful, healthy sod from which it can sprout. Unfortunately, however, a lot of sod is very unhealthy and not amenable to a nice, green lawn. If you have been trying and trying to make your lawn lush with no success, then there's a good chance that it's not your fault; it's your sod's. You can tell if you've got bad sod by being on the lookout for some common warning signs.

Fungus Growth

One of the first warning signs that you've got poor-quality sod is if you notice fungus growth on your lawn. This could appear as a moss-like covering that is typically orange in color or even as small mushrooms popping up.

Typically, the fungus grows when the sod has been exposed to too much moisture or when it was just poor quality to begin with. And, while you can try treatments, such as fungicide, these often cause even more problems. Plus, you have to spray a lot of harmful chemicals in the air. More often than not, with fungal growth, you're better off just opting for new sod.

Your Sod Is Nothing but Soil

Another sign to look for is if your sod is made up entirely or almost entirely of soil. You can easily test this by picking up a handful of sod and sifting it through your fingers.

Good, quality sod will contain minerals, roots and more, giving it a less smooth, more bulky consistency. This consistency means that the sod has the things it needs to produce healthy grass. Sod that is mostly soil, however, is not going to do you any favors and needs to be replaced.

Dead and Dying Grass

When you dream of your "perfect lawn," you probably think of one that is lush, green and healthy. Unfortunately, however, that type of grass just can't come from unhealthy sod.

If no matter what you try, your grass remains dead, brown and unattractive, your sod is probably to blame. There are so many "store treatments" you can buy that promise to fix dead grass, but if bad sod is your issue, nothing is going to work.

Don't waste your money on pretend "treatments." You're much better off tackling the real problem and opting for new and improved sod.

Weed Growth

Something else that can tip you off to bad sod is if you have weeds growing on your lawn, especially if you are finding them tough to get rid of.

When weeds sprout, it is typical because the sod is overloaded with moisture, which can be a very difficult problem to correct without replacing the sod. Furthermore, many store-bought weed killers often harm your healthy grass in addition to the weeds and can cause further problems, making them not worth the effort.

As such, sod replacement is a much better option to get rid of your weed problems for once and for all, especially because quality sod contains ingredients that can keep weeds from ever sprouting in the first place.

If you notice any of these warning signs in your own sod, or if you just want to give your lawn a fresh start, you will be glad to know that there are quality suppliers of great sod out there.

These companies produce sod that is guaranteed to sprout a beautiful lawn for you and your family to enjoy. One such company is Turf Masters Sod Farm, which is a great resource for getting the type of sod you truly need.
